Dear Gen Z, I'm gonna level with you: your Gen X

Dear Gen Z,

I'm gonna level with you: your Gen X parents know you got screwed, and we hate it. This world isn't the world we wanted for you, but we're all stuck playing in the ashes left for us by those who were not good stewards of the tremendous world that came before.

My generation was the last to see that world fading off into the sunset. We miss it every day.

Here's the thing: I know you. I'm raising several of you right now. You may get a bad rap, but I know you're not bad kids. That said, your black-pilled cynicism, your frustration, your fear, no matter how well-earned, is going to suck the joy out of your life and leave you hopeless if you don't find a way to master it. (As part of the generation that became synonymous with jaded disenchantment before you guys came along, believe me, we know.)

You got dealt a bad hand, no question. Things are too expensive. There aren't enough jobs that pay enough money to live on. College turned out to be a ponzi scheme for most of you. The world is going insane, you live every day fighting an uphill battle against what the internet and social media do to your minds and emotions, and the geopolitical situation is dangerously unstable.

But you've seen the meme below. It's true. It's happening right now. You didn't ask to be the strong men and women who take a broken world and create good times, but that is exactly the position you're in, and you can do it if you try.

Be excellent to one another. Focus on what unifies you, not what divides. Be forgiving and kind, especially of people's old mistakes. Leave all the needless racial tension behind, and judge others on the content of their character, not the color of their skin. Focus not on political or social activism, but on what you can do, today, to help make the world just a tiny bit better. Then do that again tomorrow. And the next day. And the next.

My generation will do our best to help you. We're older, we're tired, we're battle worn, but we get it. We're all on cleanup duty together. The only thing we ask is that...

This video was unexpected. Last night, after work

This video was unexpected.

Last night, after working way longer than I meant to yet again, I finally headed to bed. @jamieskojec was already asleep. I thought maybe I'd watch something for a bit, but just as I got comfortable, I heard the noise of a loud, whiny motor.

I couldn't tell where it was coming from at first. It wasn't inside the house. It sounded like a circular saw, but it was almost 11PM. My mind immediately went to the idea that we had a neighbor disposing of a body. 😬

We have a balcony off our second-floor Master bedroom. I opened the door and went outside. The air was filled with what looked like smoke, drifting hazily in front of the streetlights.

Then I realized it was dust, and what I was hearing was a leaf blower from half a block away. There's a tree and plant nursery right next to us, but who the hell was working at 11 on a Friday night? And on what?

Then I remembered: "I have a drone!"

I fired it up and started flying. I couldn't see anything on the screen. It was too dark. Then I remembered I had an ND filter on the lens for daytime shooting. I landed it, popped the filter off, and the world exploded into light and color.

On the next flight, the drone malfunctioned. I had an error on the screen, and it was drifting backward, fast. It was going to crash into our roof, or maybe our neighbor's. I frantically tried to get it up higher where there were no obstacles. "Maximum altitude reached" the machine voice grated through the speakers. I could barely see it in the night sky, but I put all my video game skills to work trying to get it out of harm's way. Finally it caught a GPS signal and righted itself, allowing me to ascend.

I buzzed the nursery. The entire parking lot looked like it was coated in ash. There was a street sweeping truck doing circles near two large, very full dumpsters.

I never figured out what was going on. I did get some cool shots.

One January 14th, 2023, I picked up my wife and tw

One January 14th, 2023, I picked up my wife and two of my boys from the airport as they returned from a trip to the East Coast. At 9:41PM, as were driving North on the AZ-51 near the Thunderbird road exit, I happened to look up in the middle of our conversation and saw a bunch of strange, orange lights just sitting there.

That section of the highway has bright streetlights, so I didn’t catch them at first. But there was something about the parallax view of these lights, the way they hovered in place, that made them feel strange. At first, I saw six, five of which were in a pentagonal formation, one of which was nearby, but not equidistant like the others were. I stopped what I was saying mid-sentence and announced that I was looking at something weird in the sky.

I also pulled out my own phone and began trying to film. By that time, the 6th light had already disappeared.

I have an iPhone 13 Pro Max, and I started with the 3x zoom, which I pointed in the general direction of the lights while still trying to keep my eyes on the road. I should have pulled over — I was driving — but I was so flustered by what I was seeing that it didn’t even occur to me. This is the video I managed to grab.

As I filmed, some of the lights began to pull away and vanish. First the fifth, then the fourth. The final three remained in an equilateral triangle formation until we passed the area where they were.

8 months later, I still think about it a lot, and I still can’t come up with an explanation that makes sense for what it was. And I wasn’t alone. Others in Arizona caught similar things that night.
